Project Outline

Artist Selection & Collaboration: We partnered with international artist Iker Muro to deliver a vibrant, transformative mural for the Wangi Wangi Netball clubhouse. The project was conceived through the lens of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), aiming to enhance the facility's identity and safety. Muro was commissioned to create a site-specific design that integrates his signature geometric abstraction with the local sports environment. By referencing the visual patterns of local infrastructure, he developed a composition that turns the clubhouse into a dynamic landmark, fostering a sense of community pride and visual interest for both athletes and local residents.

Project Management & Delivery: Our team managed all logistical aspects of the project, including coordination with Lake Macquarie City Council, site preparation, and the sourcing of high-performance materials designed to withstand the coastal environment. We facilitated a design process that balanced Muro’s artistic vision with CPTED objectives, ensuring the mural serves to reinforce territorial ownership and "activity support" at the site. By elevating the appearance of the clubhouse, the project encourages higher levels of legitimate usage and passive surveillance, transforming the venue into a more welcoming and resilient community asset.

Artistic Delivery & Legacy: The completed mural functions as a strategic design intervention. Beyond its aesthetic contribution, it reinforces the clubhouse as a well-maintained, cared-for space, which naturally discourages anti-social behaviour and increases the perceived safety of the precinct. The bold, high-contrast geometry creates a visual destination that signifies active community ownership. This project demonstrates the power of public art as a dual-purpose tool, successfully merging high-level creative output with urban safety strategies to create a more vibrant and secure connection point for the Wangi Wangi community.
